Frederick E. Bumstead 1928-2024

CORTLAND — Frederick E. Bumstead, 96, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 22, 2024 at St. Paul’s Senior Living in Greenville, Pa.

Fred was born on Feb. 14, 1928 in Johnston, a son of the late Earl and Theodora Bumstead.

He was a graduate of Johnston High School. Shortly after high school, he married the love of his life, Margaret “Peg” Bumstead on April 24, 1948; and started their family together. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy.

He worked at Copperweld Steel for 32 years before retiring in 1982 as manager of inside sales. He was a member of the Cortland United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He enjoyed camping, traveling in his motor home, golfing and playing horseshoes. For nearly 30 years he wintered in Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission, Texas. Most of all, he loved being with his family. Now he joins Peg on their final journey.

Fred will be deeply missed by his loving children, Kenneth (Mary) Bumstead, Gayle (David) Beil and Mark (Diane) Bumstead; son-in-law, Bob Danko; grandchildren, Tanya, Staci, Michael, Nathan and Melanie; great-grandchildren, Alden, Hannah, Connor, Madalen, Ethan, Toby, Caitlyn and Evelyn; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peg, who passed away on May 1, 2002; and his daughter, Janice Danko, who passed away on March 20, 2015.

A private graveside service and burial will take place in Hillside Cemetery, Bazetta.
