James P. Basista Jr. 1962-2024

GIRARD — James P. Basista Jr., 62, passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, Sept. 16, 2024, at his home.

Jim was born Aug. 4, 1962, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the son of James P. and Margaret Dzemyan Basista Sr.

He was a 1980 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School and Oregon State University.

Over 20 years ago he became a registered nurse and cared for people in the emergency department at St. Joseph Warren Hospital. He was a dedicated professional nurse who helped people during their difficult times.

Jim was a member of St. Pope John XXIII Parish-Saint Stephen Church, Niles. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Indians fan. Jim enjoyed vegetable gardening and being with his family. Most of all, he cherished all the time spent with his two-year-old granddaughter, Emma Catherine.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Diane L. (Cera) Basista, whom he married Aug. 9, 1998; daughter, Sarah (Daniel) Wood of Niles; granddaughter, Emma Catherine Wood; parents, James P. and Margaret Basista Sr. of Niles; three sisters, Ann (Jim) Prendgrast of Birmingham, Alabama, Sue (John) Murley of Columbus and Paula (Brian) James of Pittsburgh, Pa.; mother-in-law, Catherine Cera of Niles; brother-in-law, Joe (Denise) Cera of Niles; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and co-workers.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at St. Stephen Church, preceded by a 9:30 a.m. prayer service Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
