Janet Dobos 1924-2024
CORTLAND — Janet (Janina) Sobolewska Dobos, 99, entered eternal rest Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024.
She was born a twin daughter in Poland on Dec. 24, 1924, to the late Teofili Z. Pawlowskieji and Marjana I. Sobolewska.
A Holocaust survivor and war bride, Janet came to the United States in 1946, first living with her husband in Campbell and then settling in Warren. She moved to Cortland in 1995, where she lived with her daughter, Terry, until her death.
On Feb. 22, 1946, she married her husband, Michael J. Dobos Sr.; they were married for 39 years until he preceded her in death, May 29, 1985.
Janet was not only a devoted wife and mother, but also an extraordinary cook, delighting her family and friends with her culinary creations. Her expertise in the kitchen was matched only by her skill as a seamstress and she spent many years sharing her talents and creating beautiful garments.
Janet was a devout Catholic with a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother.
She leaves behind her daughters, Marilyn (Ron) Shay and Theresa Argeras; Nana’s grandchildren, Sean (Trish) Shay, Todd (Missy) Shay, Eric Shay, Christina (JJ) Fonagy, Melanie (Nick) Zappia and Michael Dobos; and great-grandchildren, Ashley (Sean), Courtney (Justin), Morgan (Austin), Liam, Meghan, Aidan, Seth, Payton, Joey and Francesca. Janet also leaves five great-great-grandchildren, Cordelia, Grayson, Rowan, Genevieve and Alice.
In addition to her husband, her parents and her twin sister, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael J. Dobos Jr.; son-in-law, Samuel Argeras; and an infant great-granddaughter, Erin Kathleen Shay.
Janet was laid to rest in All Souls Cemetery.
